Bowen Therapy was developed by an Australian named Tom Bowen in the 1950's. Despite having no formal medical training, Tom developed a keen interest in bodywork and began to experiment with techniques to alleviate pain and improve health.
Bowen's approach was influenced by his observations of how the body responded to gentle, precise movements. He developed a series of distinctive soft tissue manipulation techniques that he found to be effective in addressing a wide range of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions.
Tom Bowen primarily taught his technique to a select few individuals who became his trusted assistants and apprentices. These individuals then went on to share Bowen's methods with others, helping to spread the practice of Bowen Therapy globally.

The SMART BOWEN® technique was developed by Lea and Brian Smart as an evolution of the original Bowen Technique, integrating their extensive knowledge and experience in bodywork, Bowen therapy principles and animals.
SMART BOWEN® Therapy retains the gentle, non-invasive nature of traditional Bowen therapy while incorporating refinements and innovations to enhance its effectiveness.
